Tanden witter maken - verschil tussen waterstofperoxide en PAP

Would you like whiter teeth, but don't want expensive treatment at the dentist? There are good ways to whiten your teeth yourself, but which is the right one? In this article we highlight two bleaching methods: hydrogen peroxide and PAP ( Phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid). Let's dive in quickly so you can get on with your day.

Teeth whitening with hydrogen peroxide

What is it?

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a carbamide peroxide and this is the most commonly used peroxide for teeth whitening. Carbamide peroxide breaks down into hydrogen peroxide and urea when it comes into contact with water. So it is the peroxide that actually whitens the teeth.

How it works

Hydrogen peroxide works by oxidizing the color compounds in the teeth, leading to a lighter color. It is effective in removing superficial and deeper stains. The concentration of peroxide varies from low for home use to high for professional use, such as at the dentist.

Potential side effects

The use of peroxide leads to hypersensitivity of teeth and gums in some people. This is especially the case with higher concentrations, but also with prolonged and incorrect use.

Teeth whitening with PAP/PAP+

What is it?

PAP is an organic peroxide and PAP+ is a formulation that combines PAP with other ingredients. This is often done to increase effectiveness without putting peroxide in it.

How it works

PAP also works as an oxidizing agent, but is much softer than hydrogen peroxide. It targets discolorations on the teeth and breaks down chromogens. Products with PAP, such as those from Clearsmile, are less aggressive than peroxide-based products.

Potential side effects

Products containing PAP are safer, especially for people with sensitive teeth. It is a relatively new product on the market, so we cannot tell you much about long-term effects yet.

Benefits of PAP/PAP+

  • Safer for people with sensitive teeth and gums
  • Not harmful to tooth enamel
  • Whiten your teeth gradually for a natural effect

Are there also disadvantages? Yes, it is of course less powerful than peroxide, so you may not lighten really stubborn stains as well or only in the long term. The long-term effects are not yet clear, because it has not been around for very long.

PAP/PAP+ is a great solution for most people. Easily and affordably whiten your teeth in your own home without any harmful consequences, who wouldn't want this? Are you curious about the results? Shop our PAP formulas directly . Good luck! (Will you send us a photo of the result?)
