Brushing your teeth twice a day is important for your health. Good oral hygiene keeps your breath fresh, your teeth healthy and your body vital. But how do you actually do that, brush your teeth properly? Here is a simple step-by-step plan for brushing your teeth, so you can get started. Good luck!

1. Choose the right toothbrush and toothpaste

Before you start, choose the right tools. Use a good toothbrush with a soft, rounded bristle head. This way you prevent damage to your gums. An electric toothbrush is also a good option, as it often removes plaque more effectively. Go for a toothpaste that protects your teeth, but also cares for your gums.

2. Rinse and apply toothpaste

Rinse your toothbrush under the tap and apply the toothpaste. A pea-sized amount is sufficient. Too much toothpaste leads to a lot of foam, which makes it difficult to brush thoroughly.

3. Brush in circular motions

Start brushing at the back molars and slowly work your way forward. Use circular movements to effectively remove plaque. Don't forget to brush both the inside and outside, as well as the chewing surfaces. Place the toothbrush against the gum line so that you remove all residue.

4. Brush for two minutes

Two minutes seems short, but many people don't brush long enough. Use a timer or a toothbrush with a timer to ensure you are cleaning for long enough.

5. Don't forget the tongue!

Your tongue is a breeding ground for bacteria, which can cause bad breath and poor oral health. Use the toothbrush or special tongue scraper to gently clean the tongue.

6. Rinse

After brushing, rinse your mouth to remove any remaining residue. Also clean your toothbrush and place it upright to dry. Replace your toothbrush regularly so that you don't wear out the bristles. Think about every 3 to 4 months.

7. Get bonus points?

If you really want to do your best, make sure that you floss, brush and/or rinse after brushing. Then you can be sure that you are doing the best for your mouth!
